Teaching Assistants

Teaching assistants work under the guidance of the class teacher. Some schools employ teaching assistants who have a specific specialism, such as English, Art or special needs. Nursery Nurses

TimePlan places in nursery nurses in nursery jobs in schools, children’s centres and nurseries (including private nurseries) throughout London.  Our nursery nurses work with children from early infancy through to five year olds, helping children with their social and educational development. Nursery nurses are involved  in supervising meals and sleep times, as well as planning and supervising play activities and helping to develop children's language skills.

The work is largely restricted to being indoors, but nursery nurses also supervise outside play and sometimes accompany children on outings. Liaising closely with parents is an important part of the job as a nursery nurse.

Learning Support Assistants and Special Needs Assistants

Learning support assistants (LSA) work specifically with children with special educational needs (SEN) be it learning, physical or behavioural difficulties. LSA’s mainly work on a one-to-one basis with a child, supporting them in the classroom as well as working with them individually. To be a LSA or special needs assistant you would ideally have experience working with children with SEN however if you are patient, understanding and dedicated we can help you find a position.

Cover Supervisors

TimePlan also places cover supervisors in secondary schools in London Cover supervisors are responsible looking after the classes and delivering pre-prepared lessons when teachers are on short-term absence. Cover supervisors are occasionally needed in primary schools as well. What skills do TimePlan’s school support staff need?:

  • excellent literacy and numeracy skills
  • a keen interest in education
  • ability to form good working relationships with both staff and pupils
  • relevant experience
  • good organisational skills

Experience in schools or working with children is an advantage and we recommend volunteering in schools if you are looking to start working as teaching assistant.


Qualifications:

  • Nursery nurses must hold an NVQ Level 3 qualification in Child Care or Early Years and Education (previously known as an NNEB)
  • Whilst there is no mandatory qualification for teaching assistants, competition is high, so teaching assistants should ideally be educated to degree level or hold a relevant child-based qualification. The same also applies to cover supervisors.
  • Specialist staff should hold undergraduate or postgraduate degrees in the relevant subject.

Training:

TimePlan offers training for all registered school support staff on varied subjects including working with special needs pupils, numeracy and literacy training and supporting the national curriculum. These are free to attend and are run by our head teacher consultant Nigel Rowlands and guest speakers.
