Teaching Assistants/Learning Support Assistants

Teaching assistants work under the guidance of the class teacher.

Secondary schools employ teaching assistants who have a specific specialism, such as English, Art or special needs. In other cases teaching assistants might work with a variety of classes and needs. In addition there are many opportunities to run after-school clubs and sports activities.

Primary schools employ classroom teaching assistants to work with the teacher. This role primarily involves small group work as well as clerical jobs.

What skills do TimePlan’s school support staff need?:

  • excellent literacy and numeracy skills
  • a keen interest in education
  • ability to form good working relationships with both staff and pupils
  • relevant experience
  • good organisational skills
  • Experience in schools or working with children is an advantage and we recommend volunteering in schools if you are looking to start working as teaching assistant.
  • Whilst there is no mandatory qualification for teaching assistants, competition is high, so teaching assistants should ideally be educated to degree level or hold a relevant child-based qualification. The same also applies to cover supervisors.
