What is there to do in Kensington and Chelsea?

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea is a London borough in the west side of central London which means that it is a stone throw away from the excitement of London city. The borough includes some of the most famous areas in London such as Chelsea, Earl’s Court, Holland Park, Kensington, Notting Hill and Kensington High Street.

For such a central borough, The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea has a surprisingly large amount of parks and other open spaces where one can relax or enjoy a picnic after a hard day teaching.

Holland Park is one of the more well-known parks in the borough and is said to be the most romantic park due to its abundant wildlife and secluded hideaways. Part of the park is semi-wild woodland but the central section of the park is more formal with several garden areas that surround the ruins of Holland House. The southernmost section is used for sport and is the perfect place to have a kick around with friends.

There is a lot to do and see in Holland Park: there are tennis courts and a cricket pitch, a Japanese garden, a famous Orangery, one of London's best equipped children's playgrounds as well as a youth hostel (http://www.yha.org.uk/find-accommodation/london/hostels/london-holland-park/index.aspx) . The remains of the house form a backdrop for the open air Holland Park Theatre which stages many opera performances through out the summer.

Besides relaxing in the beautiful parks that this borough has to offer, you could entertain yourself in other ways… Why not try one of the most famous markets in the world which is remembered from the film ‘Notting Hill’ down on Portobello Road?

During the week the market, which stretches around two miles, has a mix of fruit and vegetable stalls, goods on sale and food stalls and is visited mainly by the community living locally in the area. On Fridays the second hand market is open and on Saturday the famous antiques market is held towards the Southern end of Portobello Road. There are also many arcades, galleries, shops and cafes open to cater for the flocks of tourists and visitors who visit the market. Furthermore, there is an Arts & Crafts section which is located just off Portobello Road on the Tavistock Piazza, perfect for teachers looking to take up a new hobby while they are in London!

Lastly, on the winter days when relaxing in parks, strolling around markets and playing sports may not be an option; there are still plenty of things to keep you entertained. There are loads of must-see famous museums, including the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum and the V&A art museum, and shops that cater to every need and desire…there is always something to do in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. And you will definitely ‘shop ‘til you drop’ …and where better a place to start that the world famous Harrods!
