NHS Doctors

To obtain free medical treatment under the National Health Service (NHS), you first have to register with a local doctor (GP).

You can find a list of your local GP surgeries on the NHS website, www.nhs.uk, by searching local services and providing the search engine with your postcode. Alternatively you can contact your local authority and request a list of surgeries and health centres in your area.

It is your responsibility to find a doctor to accept you on his/her register. Some doctors may indicate that their list is full, and that they are unable to accept you as their patient, if this happens ask them for the telephone number of the Practitioners Services Unit (PSU) who will be able to allocate you with a suitable surgery.

Emergency Medical Treatment

Prescriptions

If you do require medication you will receive a prescription from your GP, that can be filled at your local pharmacist. Costs of a prescription, are approximately £6.65 per item; contraceptives are free-of-charge. Patients under the age of 16 or over 16 and in full-time education are exempt from paying for prescriptions.
