London is the theatre capital of Europe. Whatever your theatrical fancy, from Checkhov to Lloyd Webber, you'll find it in the West End. Seat prices are generally around £30, but some of the more popular musicals are booked months in advance. You can get some great deals to top London shows if you shop around. Covent Garden and Leicester Square have booth selling half-price tickets, which are generally available for the day you buy them. The internet is another good way of getting your hands on cheap tickets, check out Lastminute and ThisisTheatre are just a couple of the better sites.

Away from the West End you will find the National Theatre and Globe Theatre on the Southbank and the Royal Shakespeare Company at the Barbican. The listings magazines, of which
Time Out is the biggest, are a useful source of information, or check out London's Evening Standard newspaper or Whatsonstage.com.

And it's not all lavish, high-brow, high-cost productions, either. There are huge numbers of free outdoor productions and dance events, and the fringe theatre is thriving in smaller pubs and theatres such as the King's Head in Islington or the Latchmere in Battersea.

The Royal Opera House in Covent Garden has undergone a major overhaul and is once again home to the Royal Opera. Nearby, the English National Opera is much cheaper and is sung in English (is that a good thing?), while the recently renovated Sadler's Wells Theatre in Islington continues to attract significant productions that don't have, or want, a West End venue.
